Guides for getting the most from Molao
34 articles across 8 topics — written for busy practitioners, in plain professional English.
Getting started
What Molao is, creating your first matter, and finding your way around.
What Molao is, and what it is not
Molao is a research and practice platform for South African and Botswana law. It is grounded in real judgments — not a general chatbot.
4 minHow to create your first matter
A matter is the file that holds your documents, authorities, deadlines and drafts. Create one with the four-step wizard.
3 minSwitching between South Africa and Botswana
A jurisdiction toggle controls which body of law Molao searches. Your choice is remembered across the app.
2 minLegal research
How search and AI answers work, and how to read the results.
How Molao search works
Molao fuses semantic, keyword and exact-citation search, then ranks by relevance and legal authority.
4 minWhy a 42% match can outrank a 70% match
The percentage on a result is semantic similarity, not the ranking score. Ranking also weighs legal authority, so an apex judgment can outrank a closer-worded one.
5 minUnderstanding source traceability
Every AI answer is grounded: it cites the judgments, legislation and rules it relies on, so you can trace each conclusion back to its source.
4 minUnderstanding AI confidence scores
Each answer carries a High, Medium or Low confidence badge. It reflects how well the corpus supports the answer — not a guarantee that the answer is correct.
5 minReading a research answer: the four streams
An answer separates the substantive law, the procedural pathway, the judicial interpretation and any persuasive foreign authority, so you can see each layer distinctly.
5 minTreatment signals, and what to do when your authority is overruled
The citator shows how later courts have treated a judgment. A red signal means it has been overruled or not followed — verify before you rely on it.
5 minWhat "insufficient authority" means, and why it is a feature
When the corpus lacks solid authority for a question, Molao says so instead of inventing a case. That refusal is a safeguard, not a fault.
3 minWhy Molao declines foreign-law questions
Molao covers South Africa and Botswana. A guard detects foreign-law questions and declines them, then surfaces genuinely persuasive foreign authority where local courts have used it.
4 minWhat the corpus contains — and what it does not
Molao holds most of Botswana's published case law and a demand-ranked subset of South Africa's — the judgments other judgments actually cite. Here is the honest picture.
5 minVerified versus unverified statute text
Molao shows the exact text only for statute sections it has verified. For everything else it links to the official source, because it will not display wording it cannot vouch for.
4 minWhat counts as a research search?
An AI research question is one query that returns an AI answer. Browsing judgment results does not use a research question.
2 minMatter Intelligence
Uploading documents and understanding what Molao extracts.
How to upload documents to a matter
Upload a pleading, affidavit or notice to a matter and Molao extracts the text, classifies it and analyses it automatically.
3 minWhat Molao extracts from an uploaded document
Document analysis pulls out the facts, issues, parties, dates and research topics from a document you upload — turning a static file into structured intelligence.
4 minBuilding a Matter Intelligence report
The intelligence report synthesises everything in a matter — documents, authorities, research and evidence — into a single view of facts, issues, authorities, evidence and procedure.
4 minSearching your firm's own knowledge
When you run a legal research search, Molao also searches your firm's own matter documents and shows any relevant passages above the public-law results.
3 minTrial Science
Mock oral argument, judge personas, and reading outcomes.
Running a mock oral argument In Chambers
In Chambers puts you before a judge persona built from a real judge's own judgments. You argue by typing or speaking, and are scored on authority, responsiveness, precision and decorum.
5 minHow judge personas are built
A judge persona is derived strictly from that judge's own authored judgments — their reasoning style, what persuades them and what irritates them.
4 minReading the outcome banner on a judgment
Each judgment carries an at-a-glance banner showing who won, the disposition and the costs order — plus sentencing and bail detail in criminal matters.
3 minDeadline Engine
Court days, calendar days, and the festive recess.
Using the Deadline Calculator
Enter a trigger date and a number of days, pick a reckoning method, and Molao computes the deadline against the correct public-holiday calendar.
4 minCourt days versus Interpretation Act calendar days
Court days exclude weekends and public holidays. Interpretation Act calendar days count every day but extend past a Sunday or public holiday — not a Saturday. Getting this wrong changes the deadline.
6 minWhen the festive-recess exclusion applies — and when it does not
The 16 December to 15 January recess is excluded only for specific steps under specific rules. Do not apply it by default.
4 minDocument drafting
Generating, polishing, and drafting inside Word.
Generating a legal document
The drafting studio generates pleadings, affidavits, arguments, correspondence and advisory documents, tailored to your jurisdiction, court and matter.
4 minPolishing an existing document
Document Polish improves an existing document at one of four levels, from a light grammar fix to a comprehensive polish — without changing your meaning.
3 minUsing Molao inside Microsoft Word
The Molao add-in brings cited legal research into Word, so you can ask a question and insert the answer at your cursor without leaving your draft.
2 minBilling and subscription
Plans, upgrades, currencies, and managing your subscription.
How to upgrade your plan
Upgrade from your subscription settings. Paid plans are paid by card in Rand or Pula on a secure page; free changes take effect immediately.
2 minMolao's plans compared
Free, Research, Professional and Enterprise. The Free plan is genuinely free; paid plans lift research limits and unlock Matter Intelligence, Trial Science and the Deadline Engine.
4 minPaying in Rand or Pula
Checkout is priced in Rand and Pula. You pick your billing country, and pay in your local currency on the provider's secure page.
3 minManaging or cancelling your subscription
See your current plan and renewal date, change plans, or cancel — all from your subscription settings. A cancellation takes effect at the end of the paid period.
3 minSecurity and privacy
Two-factor authentication, data protection, and account safety.
Turning on two-factor authentication
Add a second factor with any authenticator app. You scan a QR code, verify a six-digit code, and save one-time backup codes.
3 minHow Molao protects your data and privacy
Molao is built for POPIA and the Botswana Data Protection Act. Matters are isolated, data is encrypted, and your matter data is never used to train AI models.
4 minKeeping your account secure
Use a strong password, turn on two-factor authentication, and note that changing your password signs out your other sessions.
