How to create your first matter
A matter is the file that holds your documents, authorities, deadlines and drafts. Create one with the four-step wizard.
A matter is the case file at the centre of Molao. It holds the documents, saved authorities, notes, tasks, deadlines, drafts and billing for a single piece of work. Create one before you start filing documents or saving research.
Open the new-matter wizard
- 1In the sidebar, open Matters and select New Matter.
- 2Step 1 — Category: choose the matter type (for example Motion Proceedings, Action, Labour, Family, Criminal or Commercial). The category tailors the court list and the party roles that follow.
- 3Step 2 — Details: give the matter a name, pick the court, and add a case number and any notes. Set the jurisdiction to South Africa or Botswana.
- 4Step 3 — Parties: add the parties and their roles. For a criminal matter, Molao seeds the State and an accused for you to edit.
- 5Step 4 — Review: check the summary and create the matter.
What happens next
The matter opens on its overview, with tabs for documents, authorities, research, drafts, tasks, calendar, time and more. You can save any judgment you find in research straight into the matter as an authority.
On the Free plan you can keep up to three active matters. Higher plans raise this — see the plans article under Billing.
